“The only way to have a friend is to be one.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
National Friendship Day occurs every year on the first Sunday of August — August 1, 2021 — and celebrates the importance of loving platonic relationships. Friendships are the purest type of human relationships. For more than a century, we’ve celebrated the strength of friendship, and thanks to social media, we’re able to continue celebrating with our friends no matter where they are in the world.
Why We Love National Friendship Day
We can be ourselves
Friends love us for who we are. They've seen us at our worst and our best, with and without makeup, in pajamas and in fancy clothes — and they've still chosen to stick around. Thus, friends provide us with a safe space.
They offer a reality check
Friends tell the truth without worrying about hurting our feelings — and we love them for it. They'll tell us that our outfit looks horrible, or that we're making a terrible life decision — and by doing so, they might spare us future pain.
Friends mean fun
Friends make "everyday" activities special. Exercise, laundry, grocery shopping, and walking the dog can all turn into fabulous moments if the right person's with you.
Not always easy but worth it
Just like any other relationship, friendships can go through difficult times. We're all different and it is ok to have arguments, if it's a healthy relationship, we’re able to endure it and become stronger together. It is also ok to admit that we can't go through difficulties alone. We can always share it with someone else and have support to get us through to better times.
Ways to Celebrate National Friendship Day
Be Thankful
Start the day by being thankful for the friends you have and embrace the feeling of being loved and spreading love. Whether you have a small group of close knit friends or a large group of besties, your friends are some of the most important people in your life.
Let them know you care
We must never lose the opportunity to express our heartfelt feelings - in both times of joy or sorrow. Text them "Hi! Thinking of you"; make a phone call; send an (old school) card; or create a customized song playlist. Share memories and special moments on your social media to relive some of those early moments that solidified your friend group.
Spend quality time with your friends
There is no better way to celebrate than spending time with your friends. Get dressed up and head out to paint the town or have a fancy dinner. Maybe just hang out, chill at home watch movies or do nothing. Have a long video call, play together online, or go to the mall or your favorite café. Do anything that reminds you both of the special bond you share, no matter how much time has passed.
